 SupHerb - Omega-3 180 (3X60) caps

Omega-3

EFA - essential fatty acids - belong to the category of polyunsaturated fats, which are subdivided into Omega-3 and Omega-6.

Knowledge of the medicinal benefits of pine bark extract has existed for centuries, and in 1987 the Pycnogenol was registered with the United States Patent Office as a medical substance that "devours" free radicals.

The food that we consume generally contains the three types of fats, i.e., saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. The relative proportions of these fats determine the effect food has on our health. We need essential fatty acids for many physiological functions. These include creating the electrical impulses that stimulate heart function, balancing cholesterol levels, supporting the immune system, providing structural components to the brain and the nervous system (including development of the fetal brain, eyes, and nervous system), preventing attention deficit disorders and skin problems, promoting anti-inflammatory activity, control of the body's hormonal balance and integrity of the cell tissues.

Fish oil is a source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, DHA and EPA. SupHerb's 300mg Omega-3 fish oil capsules provide the optimal ratio of EPA and DHA essential fatty acids.

Principal uses:

  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Pregnancy and nursing
  • Brain health
  • Mental health
  • Menstrual pain
  • Autoimmune diseases

Cardiovascular health
Many studies associate the consumption of food-based EPA (eicosaoentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) with decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. A study conducted in the U.S. showed that people who consumed fish-based foods containing 5.5 grams of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids per month (equivalent to one portion a week of fatty fish) had a 50% lower risk of initial cardiac arrest than those whose daily diet did not contain these fatty acids.

Inflammation
Research indicates the function of Omega-3 essential fatty acids in various inflammations. It is important to note that, because of its positive effect on the intestinal cell culture, a fish oil supplement can increase the surface area of the intestinal mucosa, thus promoting the absorption of nutrient components and improving the patient's nutritional state. A deficiency of Omega-3 essential fatty acids is associated with various types of inflammations, such as arthritis, colitis, Crohn's disease and more.

Pregnancy
A sufficient supply of DHA and EPA is particularly important during pregnancy and lactation. The expectant and nursing mother must provide all the baby's DHA and EPA requirements, since babies cannot synthesize these essential fatty acids themselves. DHA makes up 15% -20% of the cerebral cortex and 30%-60% of the retina; accordingly, it is vital to the proper development of the fetus and the infant. There is evidence that a deficiency of omega-3 essential fatty acids may increase the risk of premature birth or low birth weight. It also appears that low levels of Omega-3 essential fatty acids are associated with the development of pre-eclampsia among pregnant women.

Brain health
Omega-3 essential fatty acids such as alpha-linolenic acid are metabolically converted into DHA, which is also available directly in fish oils. DHA makes up about 25% of the brain mass and, together with arachidonic acid, is a pivotal component in building brain tissue. Low levels of DHA are associated with mood swings, memory loss, vision disorders and other neurological problems. Children with ADHD have low levels of DHA and show signs of fatty acid deficiency, which include hyperactivity and short attention spans.

Mental health
Research indicates that Omega-3 essential fatty acids can help to prevent depression. Researchers have discovered that diets which reduce cholesterol levels increase the frequency of depression. This fact has been attributed to a decrease in the consumption of Omega-3 essential fatty acids and to a drop in DHA levels in the brain. If this polyunsaturated Omega-3 essential fatty acid, which is an important component of the nerve cell membranes, is replaced with omega-6 essential fatty acids, changes may occur in the properties of the cell membrane, leading to a tendency to depression. Various studies support the theory that there is a correlation between increased consumption of Omega-3 essential fatty acids and decreased incidence of depression.

Menstrual pain
Research shows that Omega-3 essential fatty acids may be effective in easing the uterine cramps associated with menstruation. The anti-inflammatory properties of Omega-3 essential fatty acids (along with their importance in producing the sex hormones and the high probability of imbalance between Omega-3 and Omega-6) may be among the factors involved.

Autoimmune disorders
Many autoimmune disorders are associated with inflammatory processes that cause various symptoms, as in rheumatoid arthritis. This is the reason that the anti-inflammatory properties of Omega-3 essential fatty acids make them important as nutritional supplements for people suffering from autoimmune disorders.
