Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) belongs to the group of water-soluble vitamins.
It is a strong antioxidant, of vital importance to human health and the proper functioning of many physiological processes in the body.

Humans, unlike plants and most animals, do not synthesize their own vitamin C and therefore must get it in their diet.

The reason that humans do not synthesize their own vitamin C is due to an evolutionary accident; apparently, many thousands of years ago a genetic mutation caused the human body to lose the last enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway to vitamin C synthesis.

Scientist estimate that if humans would not have lost their ability to synthesize vitamin C, an adult person would synthesize approximately 1,000 to 2,000 mg (1-2 gram) vitamin C per day, and 3-5 times as much under stress.

Prolonged vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy, first noticeable by fatigue, weakness in the legs and bleedings under the skin and within the joints, which gradually spread over the entire body.
Partial vitamin C deficiency is harmful to the immune system and causes delayed wound healing and impaired intestinal absorption of iron.

Vitamin C is more sensitive than other food ingredients and easily destroyed by heat, light and even contact with a metal (for example, a knife). Moreover, it is rapidly eliminated from the body by urinary excretion and does not accumulate in the body - studies have shown that approximately 73% of ingested vitamin C is eliminated from the body in less than 24 hours. Under those conditions only very little vitamin C is left for absorption by the body.

Persons taking vitamin C supplementation often complain about unpleasant side effects, such as gases, diarrhea, swelling and general intestinal discomfort, a symptom known as "acid resistance". This occurs when acid vitamin C (pH=2.4) reaches the basic part of the lower end of the intestine. The intestinal acid resistance may cause tissue extension, discomfort, diarrhea and impairment of absorption.

What is Ester C
An ester is certain type of chemical bond. Esterified vitamin C means that another molecule is bound to vitamin C and together they form a larger molecule, called a vitamin C ester.

"Regular" vitamin C is broken down in the digestive system to a number of metabolites. These metabolites increase the vitamin's uptake by the cells.
Ester C is a unique patent containing a combination of vitamin C as calcium or sodium mineral ascorbate and its natural metabolites: L-xylonic acid, L-threonic acid and L-lysinic acid.
