Essential oils should only be used in a sauna in ways that prevent the oil from coming into direct contact with hot sauna stones or the heating elements of the sauna heater.
To scent a sauna or steam bath, use methods that keep the oil - even when diluted- from coming into direct contact with the heater or hot stones.
Safe Ways to Use Essential Oil Blends in Saunas and Steam Baths
Aroma Bowl or Diffuser
- Fill a stone, clay, or stainless-steel bowl with water and add 5-10 drops of the essential oil blend. The bowl can be placed between the hot sauna stones. As the water gradually heats up, the aroma is slowly and evenly released into the sauna.
- Fill a heat-resistant bowl with hot water, add 5-10 drops of the sauna oil blend, and place it on a sauna shelf near the heater.
Scenting the Sauna Walls: Dilute the essential oil in water and spray the mixture onto wooden walls located well away from the heater and other hot surfaces.
Important: Never pour undiluted or diluted oil directly onto hot sauna stones. The oil may scorch, produce harmful fumes, and create a fire hazard.
Direct contact with the heater can also damage its heating elements.
Storage: Store tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.
