SupHerb - Ester C Complex 500mg

Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) belongs to the group of water-soluble vitamins.
It is a strong antioxidant, of vital importance to human health and the proper functioning of many physiological processes in the body.

Humans, unlike plants and most animals, do not synthesize their own vitamin C and therefore must get it in their diet.

The reason that humans do not synthesize their own vitamin C is due to an evolutionary accident; apparently, many thousands of years ago a genetic mutation caused the human body to lose the last enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway to vitamin C synthesis.

Scientist estimate that if humans would not have lost their ability to synthesize vitamin C, an adult person would synthesize approximately 1,000 to 2,000 mg (1-2 gram) vitamin C per day, and 3-5 times as much under stress.

Prolonged vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy, first noticeable by fatigue, weakness in the legs and bleedings under the skin and within the joints, which gradually spread over the entire body.
Partial vitamin C deficiency is harmful to the immune system and causes delayed wound healing and impaired intestinal absorption of iron.

Vitamin C is more sensitive than other food ingredients and easily destroyed by heat, light and even contact with a metal (for example, a knife). Moreover, it is rapidly eliminated from the body by urinary excretion and does not accumulate in the body - studies have shown that approximately 73% of ingested vitamin C is eliminated from the body in less than 24 hours. Under those conditions only very little vitamin C is left for absorption by the body.

Persons taking vitamin C supplementation often complain about unpleasant side effects, such as gases, diarrhea, swelling and general intestinal discomfort, a symptom known as "acid resistance". This occurs when acid vitamin C (pH=2.4) reaches the basic part of the lower end of the intestine. The intestinal acid resistance may cause tissue extension, discomfort, diarrhea and impairment of absorption.

In view of the above, vitamin C is usually supplied as a special formulation, not irritating to the digestive system and sufficiently absorbed and able to stay in the body for a long time. Ester C complex is a unique formulation possessing these properties.

What is Ester C
An ester is certain type of chemical bond. Esterified vitamin C means that another molecule is bound to vitamin C and together they form a larger molecule, called a vitamin C ester.

"Regular" vitamin C is broken down in the digestive system to a number of metabolites. These metabolites increase the vitamin's uptake by the cells.
Ester C is a unique patent containing a combination of vitamin C as calcium or sodium mineral ascorbate and its natural metabolites: L-xylonic acid, L-threonic acid and L-lysinic acid.

This combination of vitamin C and its metabolites promotes the vitamin's absorption and prolongs its retention time in the body before it is excreted. Moreover, the combined metabolites-vitamin preparation is both water and fat soluble, which improves its uptake by body cells.
An additional advantage of Ester C over regular vitamin C is its neutrality - pH=7-, preventing gastrointestinal irritation by acidic vitamin C.

Research has shown that after Ester-C supplementation cellular levels of vitamin C are 4 times higher than after regular vitamin C . This is because Ester-C enters the circulation and tissues 2-6 times faster and stays in the tissues 4 times longer than regular vitamin C.

Main uses Vitamin C is involved in more than 300 different physiological processes in the body and is therefore of vital importance to our health. Following are the main processes in which vitamin C plays a role:

Immune system: Vitamin C is vital for the proper functioning of the immune system by increasing the motility of scavenger cells, which have a 10-40 times higher concentration of vitamin C than plasma.

Elimination of toxic substances: Vitamin C plays a role in the breakdown of drugs and toxic substances in the liver before their excretion from the body.

Iron absorption: Critical for formation of red blood cells and storage of iron in the body.

Anti-inflammatory activity: Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties, which may help to alleviate symptoms of degenerative arthritis.
Stimulates the involvement of mucopolysaccharides in the formation of stable cartilage and bones. There is evidence that mucopolysaccharides protect arteries against arteriosclerosis.

Collagen maintenance: This protein is the main constituent of connective tissue, critical to formation of skin, tendons, cartilage, bones, teeth and the strengthening of blood vessels, and therefore vital for wound and burns healing.

Prevention of cancer: Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, important in the eradication of free radicals that may cause cancer development.

Anti-histaminic potency: Vitamin C stabilizes mast cells and has anti-histaminic properties, therefore playing a role in allergy.
It stimulates the adrenal gland and increases brain noradrenaline concentrations, improving mental alertness and preventing depression. Vitamin C also stimulates the adrenal gland to release cortisol, a hormone that helps the body to cope with stress situations.

Stimulation of folic acid activity: Vitamin C converts the non-active form of folic acid to the active form, improving its physiological activity in the body.

Clinical studies also demonstrated that vitamin C supplementation helps to reduce damage caused by smoking, improves wound healing, alleviates asthmatic symptoms, stimulates the immune system and extends life expectancy.
These facts, showing the major importance of vitamin C in maintaining human health and the prevention of diseases, form the basis for the great popularity of vitamin C supplementation.
